Quadra 6000 vs 7000 series?
« Thread started on: Jan 16th, 2004, 8:56pm »

I was just wondering if there were any other differences apart from aesthetics between those two shaver lines? I was planning on buying a sensotec, but I just found the 7865 on special for $263 NZD which is half the price of the top of the line sensotec. I am worried about it being not so good with more than a days growth as sometimes I dont shave everyday.

There are no differences between the 6000 and 7000 series Quadra models. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy a Quadra if they like to skip shaving on weekends, etc. for that very reason. The Quadra models don't do well on longer hair. If you do like to shave infrequently, make sure you have another Philishave/Norelco model handy to tackle the longer hair (Micro Action, Reflex Action, etc.).

I havn't seen much feedback on the quadra in this forum. Is it really that bad at getting medium to longer hairs? I dont mind if it takes slightly longer to shave? How is the comfort level? I would get the reflex, if it were washable, but I am not a fan of cleaning things the old fashioned way .

I think the comfort level of the Quadra is pretty good, from what I've heard. Gary Flinn uses the HQ6425 corded-only Quadra, so perhaps he can post his experiences and opinions.

Yes, I agree the comfort level of the Quadra is pretty good. I'm not sure how much I can add to this as it gets a little subjective. I had some problems with longer hairs with the Quadra and that was for a daily shave! Today for the first time ever I shaved with an electric (my Spectra) with a 2 day growth. I was blown away, speechless you might say (although still able to type ) It got rid of the growth in 3 minutes, I kept shaving an additional 1 1/2 min because my mind just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Mind you I have actually STOPPED an electric razor on a 2 day growth before. And this was after 100 min of shaving performance. It goes atleast 115 min before needing a charge. I've never been able to wear out the battery, I give up and just charge it. Is that a battery in there or some form of black magic? I honestly can't say though that the Quadra is really all that bad because I don't have enough experience with it with a 2 day growth. I was kinda unsatisfied with it's shaving performance even with a one day growth (shaving everyday in other words) as it left some long hairs. That might have gone away but with a better razor out there and plenty of money the Spectra just made too much sense. You and your razor spend a long time together. Yes you can save some money but...well look you could get the Quadra try it out and return it if it doesn't work for your beard. I can tell you the Spectra is incredible and I own both. I was impressed with the Quadra too, was actually surprised the Spectra was even better. Good chance you'll be happy with both, I think. It is quite a jump from the Norelcos I bought just a decade ago.

At first I thought the Quadra action razor was great. It works just fine when used daily. When I skipped a day I noticed shaves were taking longer and quite often I would miss patches. The real issue for me is when I let 4 days or so go by. At this point the Quadra was largely ineffective. This surprised me because I've never had problems with rotary razors tackling this kind of growth. Gary Flinn pretty much confirmed that I wasn't the only one having this trouble. Indeed he owns a Quadra but keeps his old Reflex action handy to tackle longer growth.
I give the Spectra the edge in comfort. I find the Spectra glides easier over the face. This is especially noticable in humid weather where the Quadra tends to stick to the face causing the razor to drag instead of gliding smoothly. The Remington face saver powder helps tremendously here. Not only did the Spectra add extra slots , the centre of the head is dimpled slightly. Presumably this results in less resistence with the face allowing the razor to glide easier. Add to this the comfort control which mearly adjusts the stiffness of the floating heads and pivoting platforms. When set to "most sensitive", I can get a decent shave even when applying very little pressure. Less pressure means less chance of irritation. Whenever I hear comments such as , irritation prone or sensitive skin, my first recommendation is the Spectra/Sensotec.

Thanks for all the great advice, I think i will put off the quadra special and just get a Spectra/Sensotech after my last cleaning cart for the syncro runs out.

I'm finally getting around to posting my take on the Philishave/Norelco Quadra discussion. "Norelcoman" has already posted my experience with the Quadra and I just posted the URL of this thread in Tell Mr. Steel Beard (http://iavbbs.com/gflinn/tell.htm) in my reply to yet another person who is having problems with his Philishave Quadra which is razor bumps and ingrown whiskers on the neck area. I initially suggested a pre-shave (such as the Remington powder stick I use) and shaving against the grain of the whiskers so they are less likely to become ingrown. Any other ideas?

The only other thing I can think of for him is time. I would recommend he continue shaving for the remaining two weeks of the trial period. Hopefully, these problems will lessen or go away after that time.
