Battery question
« Thread started on: May 29th, 2004, 11:36am »

I just bought a Norelco 6853XL. I want to save my 5812XL as a spare / backup . I was wondering should I store it with the battery fully charged or fully discharged or does it really matter. Thanks

Indeed it does matter. Store it with the battery fully discharged. This will prolong battery life.

The battery pack in my Philishave HQ5865 shaver finally gave out. The battery packs I saw on line give a 2.4v 600mAH rating soldered together. The nearby Radio Shack store had the pair of #23-191 replacement AA NiCads with solder tabs. The individual batteries are rated at 1.2v, 700mAh. I know connected in series, they would be 2.4v. What about the current rating? I have not opened the package yet. Should I use this set or go back to Radio Shack and order the #960-0508 battery pack in which both batteries are already attached?

It looks like I answered my own question. Looking up Bob Roach's happy experience replacing his Philishave HS925 battery pack from my own Tell Mr. Steel Beard forum and looking up the Philips part number for that battery pack, I can report that the Philips part number 4822 138 10334 is the same with both the HS925 and HQ5865 (same as Norelco 925RX and 5865RX respectively) and he also used the Radio Shack 23-191 pair of NiCads with solder tabs.

New progress report:
I soldered the battery pack together after attaching the two with electrical tape and soldered the pack onto the circuit board. In plugging the control module to the circuit board, I heard the motor run--a very good sign. I plugged in the still-disassembled shaver and noticed that both the LED and the LCD displays operated normally. The fun part will come when I reassemble the shaver. Thank goodness I have the blow-up diagram I had the foresight to ask Philips DAP of Canada to send me. I'll install a new set of HQ5 heads after I reassemble the shaver.

That's great, Gary. I wish I had soldering skills sometimes.

Looks as if I made a major goof. When I plugged the power module and the control module together, I forgot to attach the PCB holder in between. So when I unplugged the two with the fully charged battery, I may have ruined the power module so now the motor is dead. The recharging part works fine but the motor does not work at all. I'm now thinking about getting a refurb Philishave Sensotec HQ8894 rechargeable with the Li-Ion batteries from Mercury Shaver Centre. They have it for US$139.95. What do you think?

I'm sorry to hear about your razor problem, Gary. As for the Philishave Sensotec HQ8894 for $139.95 US, I think that's a good price, and I know you like a rechargeable razor when travelling. I think you should buy one. That way, too, you can compare the holes and slots system of your Quadra HQ6425 with that of the HQ8894.

Will do. What happens now is that when I turn on the shaver, the LCD display goes out and the motor does not work. When I turn off the shaver, the LCD display returns. Any ideas anyone?

Just a quick note that the refurb Philishave Sensotec HQ8894 shaver arrived today from Mercury Shaver Centre of Toronto. It came in the ultracool canister shown at http://www.shavercentre.com/8894packaging.html , just like in the James Bond movie "Die Another Day". There is a sticker on the canister saying in English and French that it's refurbished with a 1 year warranty. I'll give a full report in another thread.
