Experience Wet: Spectra vs. Cool Skin
« Thread started on: Dec 17th, 2004, 3:25pm »

On a lark, based on a couple of comments I saw here, I tried using the Spectra as a wet shaver with a can of shaving cream. As others here have reported, the result was surprisingly good...the shave is much closer than that with a dry Spectra, and is also much closer than the Activator I purchased a couple of months ago.

If anyone here has used both the Cool Skin and the Spectra as WET shavers, I'm curious to know which you prefer. So far as I can tell, the 7000 series Cool Skin may be a bit easier to clean than the Spectra series if the latter is used wet. Is that so? Any experiences concerning the advantages of one over the other, BY THOSE WHO HAVE USED BOTH AS WET SHAVERS, would be greatly appreciated.

That's a good question. I'll make this topic appear at the top of all pages in General Discussion so more people will notice it.

Why couldn't you use it wet. You rinse it under water to clean it.

It was designed as a dry razor. However, as we know, a few people are now reporting success with it as a wet razor.

Thoughts on using a Remington MS-5500 or a MS-5700 as a wet razor -- they are "washable."

Feel free to start a separate thread on that. Let's keep this one to Spectra vs. Cool Skin.

I was on the fence about posting that last reply -- will start a new thread. Sorry.

No apology necessary. I think it's great that we are now having discussion here about using washable razors as wet/dry razors. Admittedly, though, if I had a razor that was washable, I'm not sure I'd want to risk using it as a wet razor.

i thought it couldnt hurt to try...my face gets too dirty to shave before the shower & i hated that 15 minutes down time to get the face dry

i love the shave using the 8825XL wet...i have now used it for a week in this way...i have had it for 3-4 months...closest shave yet using an electric ...sometimes shaving everyday...also skipping a day...lazy...

some questions... i noticed the forward blades have a copper color..are they rusting?...i forgot to notice their initial color....

i have noticed the battery just cant seem to keep a high enough amperage...if i recall correctly higher model number spectras have a better battery...has anyone noticed too much drain on their shavers...so now not only am i adding water to do a wet shave to a dry shaver....it is also plugged in to boot!...atleast its not the hair dryer in the tub...

i am missing random hairs & yes it is on my multidirectional neck & throat area...does the cool skin have this problem also?....

the best shave yet doing the wet method was the first time at 2am after reading about this concept...so my face was definately unprepped..i think i will give the unprepped method a try for a week....

This sounds so interesting. If using the Spectra wet, if a person is using a cream or gel, what type of gel/shaving cream has been being used? Or are you shaving with a wet face in the shower?

Reason why I ask is that I am thinking of buying a coolskin model razor. I am willing to try the Spectra wet/with gel if enough positive information is posted. I have my doubts as I do not want to ruin the razor. I am going to buy a travel size gel bottle and report back.

Have a great holiday all. Enjoy!!

I have been using a Quadra for years and just got my son a Coolskin for Christmas, so I tried it this morning and - WOW!. What a great shave.

Now, having read your experimentation, I'm going to give the old Quadra a try with the same gel supplied with the Coolskin. I'll report results tomorrow.

Okay - tried the old Quadra with the Nivia Gell (supplied with the Cool Skin). It actually worked very well - about as good as the actual Cool Skin razor, although it is obviously not as convenient. I found that putting a dab of gel on the center of the cutters was fairly convenient, but not as convenient as just pushing the button on the Cool Skin and rinsing is more of a pain as well.

I definitely recommend it to those of us that have "dry" Norelcos.

This was such an interesting topic and one that I had kind of wondered about for a while. I mean if you can wash it under water, why can't a Spectra be used as a wet shaver. For the past 2 days I have done just that. I put gilette foamy on my face just as I did in my razor days, put the spectra under hot water, just as I used to do with my razor, and began. The shave was closer than any electric shaver shave I have ever gotten. It was a much quicker shave, no irritation even in the neck area, and I didn't have to keep my skin tight. The other good thing was that I had no residue from a pre-shave additive left on my face. Truly amazing. The shaver didn't bog down at all with the cream on my face. I only hope this does not do any damage to my shaver, but if the cool skin does this good, I would go in that direction if needed. Give it a try guys because for me I have never been more satisfied.

Okay, this topic was driving me crazy. I too had to try a wet shave with my spectra. I put a very light coat of shave cream on, rinsed my spectra under hot water and shaved. In no time I had a very close and comfortable shave with no irritation and in little time. Much closer than my coolskin. I just find this very interesting.

I’ve used my spectra for about a month wet and find the performance to be really great. Also for the price of the razor it’s nice to find that you get two razors for the price of one. I thing Jim has actually checked with Norelco and they confirmed it could be used wet. Wonder why they don’t promote it?
