Anyone figured out the Braun cleaning formula?
« Thread started on: Jan 2nd, 2006, 10:31pm »

I was wondering if anyone had figured out the cleaning solution formula for Braun. I read somewhere that it was mostly denatured (no water) alcohol, and a few drops of baby oil or mineral oil for lubricant.
This kind of a solution shouldn't hurt the shaver should it? Although there may also be a surfactant to help the oil and alcohol mix and keep the evaporation rate low.
I'm not against Braun trying to make a little extra on their cleaning solution, but DIY is good too!

Do a quick search on the forum. Someone posted the recipe (it wasn't denatured alcohol, but very high proof alcohol. Everclear, I think) for the formula on this board, a few months ago.

Using it might void your warranty...if they could prove it. Be careful with the homebrew stuff.

Here it is:

An old Tell Mr. Steel Beard entry from 2001 gave these instructions. I hope this helps:

Buy a bottle of "EVERCLEAR" grain alcohol (this is 95% alcohol or 190 proof available at most liquor stores)

Small bottle of lemon extract (available at any grocery store)

Directions:

Rinse out and shake out the empty cartridge a few times until there is no residue left

Air dry , or if you are in a hurry, use a hair dryer to dry the inside.

Use a measuring cup and pour approx 150 to 160 ml of alcohol (2/3 cup) into the empty cartridge

Add 5 caps of lemon extract (using the small bottle)

You now have a near duplicate mixture of the Braun Synchro cleaner. Works Great!

Wasn't there some question back then of a lubricant also?
Has anyone successfully used this method long term? Obviously you couldn't reuse the same cartridge forever, but you could refill a fresh one 1-2 times before pitching it.

If you go to Walgreen's web site:
http://walgreen.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100259&id=prod1160427

They list the ingredients for the cleaning solution as:

Ingredients
SD-Alcohol 40-B Alcohol Denat

From a phone call I made to Braun several months ago, the solution contains silicone as a lubricant. While silicone does not bother most people it does bother a few. Most of the spray lubricants from Remington and Parks, etc. also contain silicone as a lubricant.

Here's another crazy idea. Let's assume that Braun uses Silicone as the lubricant (as they said above). One of the problems for some people is that even if you don't use the cleaning cycle every day, you have evaporative loses everyday. This means that you solution is nearly gone after 4-8 weeks, depending on your house's temperature and relative humidity.
But if Silicone is the lubricant, it won't evaporate with the alcohol, it should be left over. Therefore, you could refill the alcohol (either denatured isopropyl, or ethanol-Everclear) and use the cartridge until the filter was gunked up.

Lemon extract is a degreaser right? So that would not help to lubricate the blades im thinking.

I really would like to get this figured out because i recently bought a braun 8585 activator.

Any suggestions helpful

Lemon extract is for fragrance.
