Panasonic ES 8249K

Hi All: I am considering buying a Panasonic ES 8249K to replace my Braun 360 that is about 3 years old. The Braun works nicely but I have to replace the foil and blade every 60-90 days and that's a little too expensive. My question is how long can I expect to use the Panasonic before replacing the foil and cutters? I have never used a wet shaver using only Williams Lectric shave or Remington dry powder. Also, I have read on other sites that some folks use a shaver for a few weeks to try them out and send the shaver back for a refund. Does anyone have advice for me on that? Thanks much for your sage advice.

Mr. Radio we believe you.
I am one that has always kept the shavers I purchased. Some later I gave to friends or relatives. I did not consider it the manufacturers fault if I bought something I later decided I did not like it.

Actually, "try it before you buy it" is precisely the idea of the manufacturer's return policy.
Having said that, I have never bought a shaver that I did not, initially, intend to keep. I have used their return policy...but I have never purposely taken advantage of it.
There *is* a difference.

Back to the core question of how often the foils and cutters for this Panasonic shaver should be replaced, the same question was asked for Tell Mr. Steel Beard. The best (?) answer I got was from Panasonic Australia which gave what I think was a cop out answer:
This varies from one person to another depending on density of beard, length of time for each shave, type of gel/cream used, method of cleaning and frequency of use.
Does anyone familiar with this type of shaver give a definitive answer?

First off, let's talk about your Braun 360 -- replacing foils every 60-90 days is absurd. Something extraordinary is going on in your shaver...perhaps the cutter block is sitting cock-eyed, or something is out of alignment? Braun shavers are very well made, and their foils last *about* the same length of time as any other brand...around a year for most people.
The real question I'd be asking is *WHY* your foils need to be replaced so often...something is decidedly wrong. Unless your hair is just abnormally abrasive (you're not from Krypton, right?) and is actually wearing down the foils prematurely, then something *else* is going on.
Now, back to my favorite brand...Panasonic.
I used my first Panasonic for nearly 2 years, and the foil never wore out. The cutters were still sharp, but the shave quality was beginning to decline.
And, while they're being absolutely accurate with their "varies from person to person" answer, I think you're right about it being a cop out, SteelBeard.
I don't have this particular model...but on my own Panasonic shavers, the US manual (from memory) says to replace the cutters and foil every year...every other country's manual says foil every year, cutter block every 2. And, they throw in an "or as needed" for good measure.
It's pretty consistent with most of the other shavers on the market. Remington foils, being micro-thin, are the only ones that wear out appreciably faster than the "norm."

P.S. A side thought -- when our beards are wet, they should be softer and easier to cut. I wonder if wet-shaving would cause a foil to last longer, than the same foil used dry?

Hello: Have been lying low for a time. During the past two plus years I have been using the Pulsonic, the 1050 Arcitec and today for the first time, the panasonic ES 8243A ARC 4 Nanotech. I can say I have experience with the top lines of the top rated shavers with exception of the Remington line of which I am familiar but have not used. I did like the Pulsonic and did like, do like the Arcitec, but this Panasonic, well all I can say is wow!!! I used it dry for the first shave and found the shave to be the best I have ever experienced from a electric shaver. Noise levels fit between the Arcitec and the Pulsonic, speed using dry is the same as the Arcitec (2.32 for shave # 1) comfort is better than anything I have used. I am sorry I have not used this product earlier in my shaving career. The shaver hs a great "feel" when hefting it and or using it, much like the pulsonic yet a bit lighter. I do have a question that being the manual says to use cold water when cleaning. Is this right? Advise and thanks to all the manufacturers in giving us good choices.

The manual knows more than we do, so use cold water.

I am very impressed with thorndyke's review of the Panasonic shaver. When I was using a braun the cutters and screen would wear out about every 6 months until it died. I bought a Remington and have had terrible luck getting more than 90 days use from a screen/cutter set. The current set has worked since the day before Xmas. I have not cleaned the shaver with water, I am brushing it out, and it shows no sign wear to the screen or the cutters and I have 20 days to go to beat the 90 day maximum time for wearing out cutters and screens. The shave, however, is very close and comfortable.
When this shaver bites the dust, I am going to go with a Panasonic. I am too cheap to own more than one electric shaver at a time. I only have one face and it only needs shaving once a day.

I'd like to hear what happens to the cutters and foil to make you think you have to replace them in 6 months, or 90 days? Are you brushing the foils too hard while cleaning? How hard/thick could your beards be to wear out parts like that?

The holes in the foils would get larger and eventually connect to one another until the foil would have a tear. The cutter blades would become loose and wobble and spin around.

Hello to all: Well, I have been using my panasonic arc 4 for ten days now. Closest shave I have enjoyed with a electric shaver, and very comfortable too. Have only used dry, and the normal time for a shave has been 2 minutes and thirteen seconds. The reason I mention the time is I have a couple of questions.
The manual says I should expect to get TEXT TEXT before recharging. after ten shavesTEXT TEXT I have 20 % remaining on the meter according to the display. Is this battery one of those that build up after several uses?
The next question has to do with cleaning. The manual says to clean when the proper faucet display shows. after ten shaves no faucet display. I have been "cleaning it by popping the head off and simply blowing it out. Anyone know when the ikon for cleaning pops up?

Sorry the first TT reads 14 3 minute shaves, the 2nd TT reads at a bit over 2 minutes per shave.
