Pana 8243 LCD problem
« Thread started on: Nov 4th, 2009, 05:36am »

This AM the LCD on my Panasonic 8243 was not working, all segments were lit up and some were flashing. It is about 1 yr old, purchased as a referb. Anyone else have this problem? It seems to be shaving well, do you think this indicates the shaver is going to fail or is the LCD circiut separate? Thanks.

My 8243 is also a refurb and is experiencing the same problems. It still shaves great and I've found that the display returns to normal more often than not. I'm going to keep using it until it gives up. No complaints as it's been a great shaver.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if this is a common problem. Anyone else?

My year old 8243 (puchased new) also had some issues with the LCD display...portions of some numbers would fade-out. Not sure if this problem is still occuring as I gave the 8243 to my son, after purchasing the LA93 two months ago (which has no LCD display issues, and for the price paid, better not develop any!)

Interesting question, Phil re shave performance between the 8243 and LA93.

After using the LA93 for the past 2 months, I can say that my face is "baby-butt" smooth after each shave (I shave wet in the shower).

Improved shaving over the 8243 is definitely noticeable along the jawline and adam's apple, which have always been difficult spots for my beard/facial structure.

I also find the 93 to be quieter than the 43. Although the 93 has somewhat more power/rpm than the 43 (14,000 vs. 13,000), as well as a larger shaving head (surface area), I do not find a significant difference in my shaving time.

The larger shaving head also takes some getting used to, particularly in tight areas like under the nose. The overall ergonomics of the 93 also takes a little getting used to.

All in all, I am very pleased with the performance of the 93, and do not regret making the upgrade.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Joe

I am very suspicious of any shaver's battery charge level indicators. My Remington has been wrong since new. I just charge it once a week regardless of what it says. As long as it holds a charge and shaves, it's OK. If it's still under warrantee, then return it for a replacement. Otherwise, shave for a week and recharge it.

although mines a refurbished es8103, it has had the same problem.

it was working quite fine until one day when i turned it on the lcd was displaying mixed numbers and there was liquid on the lcd (above the actual lcd screen, beneath the actual shaver casing).

it still worked a few times after that event occurred, then suddenly one day (probably about 2-3 weeks later) it kept turning on and off by itself at random times while i was trying to clean it under the faucet.

afterward, i charged it til 100%. the next time i went to use it, it wouldn't turn on at all.. and now its completely dead

The problem could be caused by water leaking into the shaver. Perhaps refurbished shavers are not as watertight as fresh-from-the-factory units.

Zee,

As noted in my post above, my 8243 with LCD problems was purchased new, not refurbished.

You were the exception. Three of the posters who were having LCD problems had purchased refurbs.

I purchased mine new, and the LCD starting getting screwy after about 5 months or so. I never bothered returning it under warranty because it was otherwise working fine.

I also purchased mine new and the LCD went screwy after about 5 months. As it was under warranty I decided to complain and sent my shaver off to a repair place in New Jersey according to Panasonic's instructions. There followed 8 weeks of waiting, during which the repair company and Panasonic blamed each other for the long time this was taking.

Anyway, I have it back now and am interested to find that my black, blue, and silver ES8243 is now all black. The repair company tell me they did not replace the whole razor, so I assume they replaced the outer body. I have 2 questions:

1. Those who've had problems with the LCD, did you have the model trimmed with blue and silver? (Maybe that trimming makes it more susceptible to water leaks?)

2. I used to ignore the instruction manual telling me to not rinse the shaver in hot water. I assumed that if I could shave in the shower in warm/hot water, rinsing it in the same temperature water couldn't do any harm. Now, after the repair, I'm religiously rinsing only with cold water. Anyone find that it makes any difference? (I'm thinking could that have damaged the LCD?)

I didn't send mine back because I was afraid of exactly this kind of thing happening.

Mine was the all-black model from Sharper Image:

I always used it while showering, so I just rinsed it right there in the warm/hot water.
